The University Library at Innsbruck
Architect: DI Dietmar Rossmann
They are centres of knowledge, stationary and nevertheless without borders in the age of digital knowledge clouds. Research, investigation, reading all take place on the spot: in a library. Clear design and furnishings that promote concentration and support hard work. This was also the goal at Innsbruck’s university library, which is also the Library of the Province of Tyrol.
Centre of knowledge The Library of the University and Province of Tyrol, Innrain 50-52, is the third largest library in Austria with some 3.2 million volumes, 7,470 journal subscriptions, 18,420 licensed electronic published periodicals and a valuable collection of rare books and manuscripts. It is spread over 11 locations across the city of Innsbruck and currently services some 25,000 active library users.
Knowledge needs space Even if increasing digitalisation is cutting the space requirements of some knowledge carriers today, more space is still required because of the increasing tide of publications, a great many of them in printed form. An additional space area of 2,200 square metres was thus created following the integration of the new Humanities Library in the University Library: this consists of 128 reader spaces, 26 office workplaces plus two large conference rooms for 30-40 persons.
Atmosphere and concentration As symbols of knowledge, libraries have a very special atmosphere – whether they are traditional or ultra-modern. Whatever their style, they need to enable a high level of concentration. This can be achieved through design and colour schemes as well as with special lighting. Furnishing solutions must reflect the special needs of their visitors. With this in mind, Bene worked together with the architect Dietmar Rossmann and the lighting specialists at Zumtobel to create a unique workbench with integrated lighting for the reading room.
Overall, a formal linear design has been selected to reduce distraction and support efficient work and learning. The colour scheme selected in black, gold and clay tones is in line with the Bene "Industrial" colour concept. The effect is as serious as it is modern and it achieves a harmonious atmosphere both in the reading areas and in the spaces allocated for meeting and communication.
In the storage area products from the K2 line and drawer pedestals are used. The T7 Workbench with a third working level is also used in the offices. Kizz chairs lend an air of formal lightness while ensuring first class seating comfort.
