Office.Info June 2009
Dear Reader,
There is a great deal of interest surrounding the issue of "what we really need and what the world really needs". Within the design community, too, there is increasing focus upon social responsibility and the need for activities that make a positive contribution towards society. We can look at the criticism of culture and consumerism, that was prevalent during the 1960’s, for examples such as the recently re-published book "Design for the Real World: Human Ecology and Social Change" written by Austrian Victor Papanek between 1963 and 1971. This book is highly recommended.
What does the world need in places where people do not even have the basic needs for life? BASEhabitat is an initiative for construction in developing countries that offers astounding solutions as well as astounding worth. This newsletter also mentions an exhibition that presents design ideas for products that make life easier and can even save lives.
Surplus is characteristic of the western world - even when it comes to communication. Our article "against" communication overflow includes tips for survival.
"Design can and must become a way in which young people participate in changing society", wrote Victor Papanek. This issue of the Office.Info aims to provide you with inspiration along this theme.
