Bene SEAT ART 2008.

Bene invited ten selected architecture firms and design studios to participate in the creative competition SEAT ART. Bene Rondo seat shells inspired fantastic ideas, the best of which received awards by a prominent jury.

The creative competition for this year’s holiday season was held for the fifth time– for the first time titled "SEAT ART". The motto was: How many ideas fit into a seat?

Rondo reloaded.

Rondo is a chair with sculptural qualities. It was dreamed up in 2004 by Bene Design (Christian Horner, Johannes Scherr, Kai Stania) and has secured its spot worldwide in many areas ever since – in offices, restaurants and private homes. Its characteristic feature is two organically formed and smartly joined laminated wood shells. Ten selected architecture firms and design studios were invited to conceive ideas – and create something new in an intensive dialogue with sculpted wood pieces. Redesign, transformation, decoration, deconstruction: Everything was possible.

The jury.

The expert jury featured prominent names such as design editor Amelie Znidaric (Die Presse / Schaufenster), architecture critic Wojciech Czaja (Der Standard) and designer Johannes Scherr, who together nominated the best creations out of 20 projects. The award ceremony was held on the evening of November 27th, 2008 at the Bene showroom in Vienna.
The jury was impressed by the outstanding quality of the entries: "It is impressive how intensely the participants dealt with the topic - both in terms of creating a concept and implementing the design. Participants invested much time and resources in the projects."

The winners.

1. Price: Gharakhanzadeh Sandbichler Architekten
The winning entry is a film by Gharakhanzadeh Sandbichler architects. Under the personifying title of "BEN E." they hit the nail (or in this case the motto of the competition) on the head: The Rondo shell sets out to explore its identity: "Do you know what I am." The multitalented furniture stumbles upon a series of funny and practical scenarios – heading straight toward an identity crisis. But there is a happy end.
The jury on their decision: "The most convincing implementation of the theme of the competition. It was an excellent presentation in the form of a film."

2. Price: solid architecture
The object is titled, "I told you it was dangerous to destroy a classic. " With this contribution to the design discourse solid architecture managed to convince the jury: Classics are a hot topic for designers – What does it take to create a classic? – and for collectors alike. An in-depth discussion – Watch out and don’t take a nosedive!

3. Price: Felix Keller
The "Wiege" (cradle) was born as a result of balancing career and family – and all necessary modifications when people decide to have children. The result is a beautifully shaped cradle that evokes the shapes of the original Rondo design. The jury reached a unanimous decision and decided to "put a baby into it".

Two recognition awards:
Caramel architects
: "Bene 2009", an incredibly funny calendar presenting Rondo’s features on 13 images, including the front cover.

Polka
: "Disco-Rondo"
The Rondo shell was turned into a disco ball, as a symbol for good times and plenty of energy. Pure lightness.

The winners were showered with coveted prizes: furniture pieces by Wilkhahn, Matteo Grassi, Bene, Fritz Hansen and Artemide.

All entries are on display until January 31, 2009 at the Bene showroom in 1010 Vienna, Renngasse 6. Opening hours: Monday – Thursday: 8 am – 5pm, Friday 8 am – 3:30 pm.
