What do people need to do what?
Or: The What determines the How

PearsonLloyd
is one of the most successful design studios in Great Britain. Their work is diverse and has received numerous awards. London Designers Luke Pearson and Tom Lloyd impressively demonstrate what constitutes high-quality industrial design - namely, the intelligent translation of changing work styles, production possibilities and living circumstances.

Interior design, furniture design and consulting are as much a part of PearsonLloyd’s broad range of projects as are product design and structuring public spaces. No one can deny the versatility of the designers of the new Bene PARCS furniture set. And yet all of their work has one thing in common: its focus on people.

Founded in London in 1997, the PearsonLloyd design studio is without a doubt one of the most successful studios in Great Britain. The firm's expertise covers a broad spectrum that is valued by numerous international clients such as Artemide, Classicon, Fritz Hansen, Knoll International, Lufthansa, Walter Knoll and Virgin Airlines. Whether a lighting project in Westminster or Sheffield, desk and storage programmes for Knoll International that took into consideration the dynamic transformation of the workplace, or the design of a new generation of executive airline seating for Virgin AirlinesLuke Pearson and Tom Lloyd constantly demonstrate the quality of their design. PearsonLloyd works on projects across a wide variety of industries that address different clients' needs, and these individual projects have a stimulating effect on each other. "We like the complexity of relationships, the complexity of production and the complexity of industry", says Tom Lloyd.

More than just two disciplines

Luke Pearson
and Tom Lloyd met as post-graduate design students at the Royal College of Art (The RCA) in London. Pearson initially studied industrial design at Central Saint Martin’s College, and then he dedicated himself to furniture design at RCA to gain a more comprehensive perspective. Lloyd, however, took a different path. He first studied furniture design in Nottingham, but he missed the kind of innovation that could surpass technological imperatives. That’s why he also went to RCA, where he studied product design. During their studies at the Royal College of Art, Pearson and Lloyd met and stayed in touch after they graduated. They were both convinced that, if it was possible to intelligently combine and understand both disciplines, they would be able to offer something more holistic. Their progress is clearly visible.

Pearson
and Lloyd approach their work in different ways, and they complement each other very well. There are no clearly divided responsibilities – they both design and lead projects, which may not seem ideal for a business manager, but it enables them both to support each other at all times and give important input. Also, from the very beginning, it proved to be extremely helpful to discuss new assignments and design processes together, even when their opinions diverged. Then they divide the projects up between them, always keeping an open invitation to creative dialogue. Luke Pearson says, "One of the most interesting and most important aspects of design is to always keep your eyes open and constantly collect new information. You should never assume that you already know everything".
Today, in addition to their successful design business, Luke Pearson and Tom Lloyd are guest lecturers at the Royal College of Art and D&AD London and regularly give lectures at international events, such as Design Indaba in South Africa.
